Interim president of the People’s Progressive Movement (PPM) Mark Katsonga Phiri says despite mounting pressure from opposition and civil society organisations, calling for President Joyce Banda to step down would not be necessary.

Katsonga Phiri said this in Neno, his former constituency, during his ongoing 20-Point Plan campaign.

“When the President was leaving for the United States of America [USA], she told us that she was going to attend the UN meeting and also ask for funds to develop this country, so what good will this bring, if we disrupt her?

“And then, some people are saying she must resign, why? I say we let her finish the six months she has and then vote normally. These people want to disturb the elections,” he said.

According to the interim leader, the President’s job is to see to it that, the culprits of Capital Hill cash-gate scandal are brought to book by the police.

Meanwhile, Katsonga Phiri, has also expressed his desire to contest for both the presidency and member of Parliament (MP).

He was once MP for the constituency from 2004 to 2009.
